Ronaldo accused of rape: Judge proposes dismissal of a rape case against Ronaldo over victim's lawyer's 'inappropriate behavior'
| Ronaldo is considered one of the greatest players in the history of football. He has won Ballon d'Or and awards in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017 |
A US judge has recommended that a rape case against famous Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo be dropped. Prior to the verdict, Magistrate Judge Daniel Albertis reviewed the case and suggested that the leaked conversation between Ronaldo and his legal team should not have been used in the case.
In 2009, a 34-year-old woman named Catherine Mayorga accused Cristiano Ronaldo of allegedly raping her in a Las Vegas hotel. The prosecution, which chose not to file a criminal case against Ronaldo in 2019, said the allegations were "doubtful" and "there is no admissible evidence to substantiate the allegations."
The Clark County District Attorney's Office said in a statement that the victim reported the sexual assault in 2009, but did not say where it happened or who the attacker was. The police were not 'capable of conducting a proper investigation.
The woman then filed a lawsuit seeking damages.
Ronaldo has always vehemently denied the allegations of rape made by the American woman. "The case must be dismissed because of the misconduct of the woman's lawyer," Judge Briggs wrote.
But "if the court does not decide to dismiss the case, the actions of the woman's lawyer could have far-reaching and dangerous consequences for the court process from a legal point of view."Ronaldo's lawyer Peter Christian has welcomed the recommendation.
"We are pleased with the court's detailed review of the case and the fact-based proposal to properly enforce the law and dismiss the civil case against Ronaldo," he said. The woman said that when she reached an agreement with Ronaldo in 2010 regarding her claims, the details of which could not be disclosed, at that time she did not have such an understanding of the law.
The German magazine Der Spiegel published an interview with the woman who accused Ronald. According to the magazine, the woman made an out-of-court deal with Ronaldo in 2010 under which Ronaldo paid the woman 37 375,000 in exchange for which she agreed that she would never reveal her allegations.
The woman's lawyer did not respond to a request for comment.
Response to social media:
While there has been a strong reaction on social media to the dismissal of the case by some quarters, especially women, Ronaldo's fans are happy and there is a battleground on social media between critics and fans.
"I am not surprised that Ronaldo's rape case is being dropped, even though he has pleaded guilty, a rapist is confirming the allegation," said Austin Semyonov, criticizing the recommendation. He has DNA) and the police have a lot of videos and other evidence against him. But as the AC and DC put it, "look at the perfection of money."
"The way Ronaldo has managed to suppress this rape case, he is very sorry to know all this," Liam wrote. Another user, Colin de Konoha, wrote: "Judge Ronaldo is supporting lawyers because the case was based on leaked documents. This does not mean that Ronaldo has been given a clean chit. According to the details so far, he is still charged with rape.
On the other hand, Ronaldo's fans are happy and most say that they already knew Ronaldo could not do that.
"I knew Ronaldo was innocent," Joseph wrote.
"They were not found guilty," Melinda wrote. The case is being dismissed and the two are different. It is often the case that even if you are guilty, you escape the law because law enforcement cannot bring any credible evidence.
